Earth might be better off without us, no offense. While opposable thumbs and tech are cool, our money obsession is overkill. Climate change and human impact are out of control, and alongside major issues like cancer and COVID-19, saving animals and the planet still matters. Growing up in Florida, I've witnessed nature's beauty and the ugly side of mistreatment. My art sparks conversations, drawing inspiration from news and social media to create visually stunning pieces. It's not always doom and gloom; I mix in neutral or optimistic stories too, featuring loved ones as characters. This journey, from serene to chaotic, aims to capture the essence of our impact on the world.
Lauren Nielsen (b. Crystal River, Florida) is currently based in Georgia, and attained her BFA in Painting with a Drawing minor at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2024. Her childhood in Florida was abundant with boating days, playing in the dirt, working on the farm, and fresh-caught meals. Lauren spent most of her time enjoying the outdoors, which led to her unbound appreciation of the world’s beauty. Among those great experiences, in time she could not ignore witnessing firsthand humans' adverse effects on the environment. She attended the Academy of Environmental Science during her high school years, which piqued her interest in wildlife preservation. Lauren’s work advocates for the natural world, using bright colors and flat shapes to subdue the intensity of the subject matter. By rendering these naturalistic scenes, Lauren intends to create work that visually appeals to a wide demographic audience to spread environmental awareness. Her work is research-based with subjects and motifs represented through collages made from free images as a reference for her larger work. She embeds sobering issues within her work while creating accessible images that transform fairytales into billboards for action.
